How to Wash Activewear So It Lasts Longer

Activewear is designed to stretch, recover and move, which means harsh washing habits can affect it differently from everyday cotton clothing. The most important rule is always to follow the garment care label, but a few general habits can help reduce unnecessary wear.

Wash with similar fabrics and colours

Where the care label permits, wash activewear on a gentle cold cycle with similar colours. Keeping rough items such as towels, heavy denim and hook-and-loop fasteners separate can reduce abrasion.

Turn garments inside out

Turning leggings, bras and tops inside out before washing can help protect the outer surface of the fabric while still cleaning areas that sit closer to the skin.

Use a mild detergent

More detergent is not necessarily better. Excess detergent can be difficult to rinse completely from stretch fabrics. Fabric softener is also best avoided unless the individual garment label specifically allows it.

Air dry when permitted

High heat can be hard on some elastic fibres. Where the care label permits, air drying away from harsh direct heat is a gentler option. Never ignore product-specific drying instructions.

Do not leave damp activewear in a bag

If you cannot wash garments immediately after training, allow them to dry before placing them in the laundry basket. Leaving damp activewear compressed for long periods can contribute to odour and fabric stress.

Take extra care with pale colours

Light activewear can pick up pigment from self-tan, makeup, dark towels and denim. Separate pale pieces where practical.
